Free Things To Do in Exmouth

We all love a good tour, but there is something nice about finding low cost or free alternatives, especially if you’re trying to stretch the budget. Here are our favorites:

6. Swim at Oyster Stacks

About one hour from the township of Exmouth is the awesome Oyster Stacks. If you love snorkelling with bright coloured fish, big bommies right from the shore, you’ll love Oyster Stacks!

It has relatively calm water and was perfect for myself and our three year old to snorkel close to the shore. The walk to the water can be difficult underfoot and you need to choose your entry carefully as there are many slippery rocks, but the slow short walk is worth it once in the water.

Please check the tide times before swimming, as it is best to snorkel on high tide to protect the delicate coral.

7. Lounge around at Turquoise Bay

The pristine waters of Turquoise Bay, 60km from Exmouth, are possibly the best we’ve seen. The idyllic white sands and bright blue inviting waters are just asking to be enjoyed for an afternoon. Sit on the sand and watch the gorgeous scenery, or jump into the water where it all comes to life.

If you’re a confident swimmer, head out around 100m and you’ll find countless bommies with bright-coloured fish. There is a strong drift, so be sure to enter the water accordingly and check the signs when you arrive.

8. Vlamingh Head Lighthouse

This interesting historical stop is a perfect way to break up your drive around to some of the most awesome Western Australian snorkelling spots. Only 30 minutes out of the town of Exmouth, you’ll find Vlamingh Head Lighthouse. Stand under this decommissioned lighthouse and check out the view!

Visiting Lighthouses is one of the best things to do in Exmouth

The historical side of things is worth reading, spoiler alert: it was built after a shipwreck in 1907 which I’ll discuss shortly, another spot worth visiting. It also held WW2 significance due to its location. While you can’t enter the lighthouse, there are plenty of historical plaques to read. It is an interesting insight into life many years ago.

9. Mildura Wreck

As you’re driving around the coastline from Exmouth, stop at the Mildura Wreck. It is a short walk from the carpark, but as soon as you’re over the dunes, you’ll see the wreck only 100m or so from the shore. Depending on the tide, you’ll be able to see a fair amount of the wreck.

The story that goes with this wreck is very interesting, and it really shows how hard life was years ago.

It is possible to snorkel to the Mildura, but due to the location at the tip of the peninsula, it is difficult to snorkel with strong tides and exposed ocean. We elected to view from the shore, where you can also spot many turtles often.

Visiting Mildura Wreck is one of the best things to do in Exmouth

It is also a brilliant viewing platform of the array of mysterious ariels. I’ll explain shortly…

10. Exmouth Town Beach

Town Beach in Exmouth is a convenient spot for relaxation, located just east of the town centre. The beach offers a sandy shoreline suitable for swimming, especially during high tide. You won’t find the coral and fish like you can on the western side of the peninsula, but it offers a nice swimming spot.

Facilities include public toilets, picnic benches, and a grassy BBQ area, making it perfect for family outings. The beach is accessible by car, generally with hard-packed sand, but check before driving if you have a 2WD car.

11. Antenna Array

Not technically a ‘stop’, but we’ve never before seen anything like it!

You’ll notice the American influence throughout Exmouth – did you know that prior to Exmouth being a tourist mecca for swimming with Whale Sharks, it used to be a Naval base for submarine communications?

This led to many Navy infrastructure being built, including the impressive array of towers situated on the coast North of the town. If you find this stuff interesting like we did, drive past and check out this unique sight!

I won’t add a photo as I think you just need to see it yourself, but imagine a huge cluster of tall AM towers with wires going everywhere!

Our Tip: Before heading north to the Antenna array, visit the Exmouth Discovery Center, which we’ll get to in a few paragraphs time to read up on the interesting history.

12. Milyering Center

The Milyering Discovery Centre is 54 km from Exmouth in Cape Range National Park.

Established in 1988, this eco-friendly centre offers a wealth of information on the Ningaloo Coast World Heritage Area. The centre also provides light refreshments, souvenirs, and snorkel gear for hire or to buy. A public telephone and Telstra mobile reception are available on-site, as there’s limited mobile phone reception in Cape Range.

Operating hours are from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM daily.

Our Tip: Stop by here to get the latest info on tide times, and water / marine animal safety precautions. Read this article here on water safety.

13. Water Park in Exmouth

This one is for the kids! Opposite the main shopping district, you’ll find one of the best free water parks around. With a fully enclosed fence with a gate, the whole family can run under the water or sit on seats around the edge.

The whale theme continues through to the water park, with marine animal sculptures and pirate ships with water canons. As a bonus, it is fully covered from the warm Aussie sun. You’ll also find toilets close by, and it is a very short walk to a coffee shop… just FYI ๐Ÿ™‚

FAQs

If you’re still undecided about the best stuff to do in Exmouth, here are a few questions that get asked often.

Which is better Coral Bay or Exmouth?

Coral Bay has lovely beaches, and you can swim with colourful fish and find some bigger ocean wildlife if you’re lucky. Coral Bay is a small touristy seaside town, compared to a larger town with more facilities at Exmouth.

In Coral Bay, you have the option of staying in Caravan Parks within the main street, or Bush (Wild) Camping along the coast south of the town. These spots book out quickly, so book ahead during the peak season April – Nov.

Exmouth is a larger town with more facilities and lots of options for bush camping.

The best option is to visit Coral Bay on your way to Exmouth, I would suggest planning on a night or two at Coral Bay.

Our Tip: Don’t plan on filling up with water at Coral Bay unless it’s necessary. You need to pay for water as it’s tanked into town, and Caravan Parks don’t let you fill up your tanks while staying at Coral Bay. Food at the grocery store is also very pricey. Plan your shop at Exmouth.

How many days do you need in Exmouth?

The perfect length of stay in Exmouth would be 3-4 days within the town at a Caravan Park, then at least 1 week at one of the bush campsites in Cape Range National Park.

If camping isn’t your thing, then at least 10 days at Exmouth would be perfect so you can take the day tours to the other side of the peninsula, and also get some rest in between exploration days.

Is it worth visiting Exmouth?

Absolutely! Exmouth offers unique experiences that you can’t find anywhere else, possibly in the world. Swimming with Whale Sharks, jumping into pristine waters to snorkel with amazing fish, the quirkiness of the town with the mix of American and Aussie memorabilia, it is a place you must visit.

This article covers all the best snorkelling spots on the Ningaloo Reef

Plan on staying longer than you expect, and remember to book ahead!

Can you swim in the ocean at Exmouth?

Much of the Exmouth hype is swimming with Whale Sharks! Even though there is the word ‘shark’ in whale sharks, they’re safe, majestic creatures to swim with.

Of course, like any ocean, there are dangers, check out this article that explains the safety measures for swimming in the ocean at Exmouth. Common sense and a bit of local knowledge, and Exmouth is a safe area to swim.

Our Thoughts

In our experience, the most exciting thing to do in Exmouth is to jump in the water, see the amazing Ningaloo Reef and simply lap up the tranquillity of this amazing part of the world.

The town offers so much, we spent hours at the water park with the kids, they loved playing in the sandpits and tractor playground at Whalebone Brewery, but we also really enjoyed our time in the natural bush sites in Cape Range National Park.

There is nothing better than waking up the the quiet sounds, knowing your only decision for the day is which part of the Ningaloo Reef you explore today.

If you’re on your big lap, or looking for a standalone holiday, Exmouth won’t disappoint.
