Expedition Ancient Archive is a documentary storytelling project tracing Australia’s ancient landscapes. A journey that will take us from bioluminescent waters older than oxygen itself to caves recording 500,000 years of climate data. Five stories. 3 billion years. One story.

The Concept

Australia holds some of the oldest landscapes on Earth. The rocks here remember when there was no oxygen to breathe. The forests remember when dinosaurs walked beneath them. The caves remember every year of rainfall for half a million years. As humans, it is our prerogative to uncover the past in the hope of preserving the future.

The Expedition Ancient Archive traces this story through five landscapes:

• Before oxygen existed, bioluminescent organisms that lit up a world without air
• When oxygen changed everything, the fossils that prove complex life became possible
• The forests that kept breathing, ancient rainforests still producing oxygen after 100 million years
• The ecosystems under threat, alpine forests running out of mountain
• The archives that record it all, caves holding 500,000 years of climate data

Each story follows a physical journey—a night kayak, a mountain climb, a descent into darkness—that becomes a passage through deep time.

The Five Stories

The expedition focuses on five specific landscapes:

• STORY 1: The Living Light Gippsland Lakes, Victoria
  Night kayaking through bioluminescence older than oxygen itself. For over 3 billion years, the glow in these waters has been a window into a world before breath.
• STORY 2: The Ediacaran Shore Flinders Ranges, South Australia
  The fossils in these ancient ranges are proof of the moment oxygen changed everything. 550 million years ago, complex life finally became possible.
• STORY 3: The Breathing Forests Otway Ranges, Victoria
  This forest has been breathing for 100 million years. It survived the extinction of the dinosaurs. Now it’s struggling to survive us. Walking old logging tracks to find what was destroyed, what survived, and what grew back.
• STORY 3: The Silent Summits Victorian High Country
  These trees have been walking uphill for 10,000 years, following the retreating snow. They’re almost at the top. What happens when they run out of mountain? Elevation becomes a climate timeline—healthy forest at the base, dying trees at the summit.
• STORY 4: The Climate Library Blue Mountains, New South Wales
  Every layer of calcite in these caves is a year of rainfall. The formations record 500,000 years of Australian climate. Somewhere in the darkness, there are handprints left by people who lived through the last Ice Age.

Proof of Concept

The Ancient Giants — Valley of the Giants, Western Australia

Before the main series, we’re publishing a proof of concept story from Western Australia’s Valley of the Giants. You can park a car inside a Red Tingle tree, and it’s still alive above you. These hollow kings have survived 65 million years of fire. But modern mega-fires are different.
