Our Biggest Tip Before You Arrive
Before we dive in, here is our number one, most important piece of advice: Book everything in advance!
For peak season (generally April to October), you need to book accommodation and major tours (like the Whale Shark swims) 6, or even 12, months out. We’ve seen so many people leave it to the last minute and miss out.
As soon as you have your travel dates, book your accommodation and tours right away. Here is our 3-day itinerary suggestion:

Your 3-Day Exmouth Itinerary
Day 1: Town & Sunset
Day 1 Overview: Arrive, get settled, and explore the town and nearby coast.
Afternoon (Arrival): Once you’ve picked up your hire car and checked into your accommodation, it’s time to get your bearings.
We recommend heading to Town Beach for a quick stroll or a dip. It’s right near the town centre and is a fantastic, calm spot for swimming, especially at high tide.
If you’ve got kids who need to burn off some energy after the trip, the free Water Park opposite the main shopping district is an absolute winner. It’s fully fenced, covered from the sun, and our kids loved it.
Drop into the shops opposite the water park and grab a few snacks, basic supplies for a picnic lunch for the 3rd day and drinks.
Late Afternoon (The MUST-DO Sunset): For your first sunset, there’s only one place to be. Drive up to Vlamingh Head Lighthouse, just 30 minutes out of town. This is the spot to watch the sun melt into the Indian Ocean. The views are spectacular.
On your way up or down, stop to check out the historic Mildura Wreck. We elected to view it from the shore (you can snorkel it, but tides are strong) and were rewarded by watching turtles playing in the waves just offshore!
Evening: You’ve got to be hungry by now! Head back to town for dinner at the Whalebone Brewery. This could quite possibly be the best brewery on the Western Coast! It’s such a great, family-friendly spot.
The beers are great, the wood-fired pizza is delicious, and for the kids (or kids at heart), there’s a huge sandpit complete with an old tractor and truck they can play on. A perfect way to end your first day.

Day 2: Ningaloo Reef
Day 2 Overview: A full day dedicated to that ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ experience.
All Day (Book This First!): Today is all about the Ningaloo Reef, and this is the day you’ll tick off a major bucket-list item.
Swim with the Whale Sharks! (March – August) This is the reason many people visit Exmouth, and it’s an experience that’s worth every single bit. We travel Australia on a budget but always planned on doing this one experience. It is absolutely, 100% a bucket-list item you will never forget.
These tours generally run all day, pick you up, provide all your snorkel gear, and include a professional underwater photographer to capture those amazing photos. Plus, food and drinks are sorted! For help picking an operator, see our Whale Shark Tours Exmouth guide.

Alternative (if you’re outside the season): Swim with Humpback Whales! (August – October) If you’re visiting later in the season, you’re in for another incredible treat. You can join a tour to swim with the majestic Humpback Whales as they migrate. This is another of the only places in the world you can do this, and it’s just as breathtaking. If you’re planning your dates around one of these seasons, our guide to the best time to visit Ningaloo Reef breaks it down.

Evening: You’ll probably get back in the late afternoon, absolutely tired but buzzing from one of the best days of your life. We recommend a simple, easy dinner tonight. Either make something at your accommodation (if you’ve got a self-contained villa) or grab a casual feed at the Potshot Hotel Resort for some classic pub grub.
Day 3: Cape Range National Park
Day 3 Overview: Exploring the stunning gorges and world-class snorkelling spots.
Morning (Get an Early Start): Get up early, pack your lunch and snorkel gear, and start the drive into the magnificent Cape Range National Park (a small national park pass fee applies). Drop into the visitors’ information area for your passes and for extra information particular to the day.
Your first stop is Mandu Mandu Gorge. This is a fantastic hike of a few kilometres that takes you through a dry creekbed, up the gorge walls, and then to the top of the range. From the top, you get the most fantastic lookout with views over the Ningaloo Reef. It’s a bit of a scramble in parts, but so worth it.

Our Tip: Plan to hike first thing in the morning to beat the heat. Take lots of water and sun protection. Carry a first aid kit including a snake bite kit. Nothing unusal, just hiking tips.
Mid-Morning (Snorkel Spot 1): After your hike, it’s time to cool off. Head to Oyster Stacks, which is a true snorkeler’s dream. You’ll find bright-coloured fish and big bommies (coral columns) right from the shore. It’s perfect for kids and beginners as the water is relatively calm and you don’t have to swim far. For more spots like this one, check out our Ningaloo Reef Snorkelling guide.
Our Tip: You must check the tide times before swimming here. It is best to snorkel at Oyster Stacks on a high tide to protect the delicate coral and to avoid getting stuck on the rocks.
Lunch: There are no shops in the park (besides light refreshments at the Milyering Center), so find a shady spot and enjoy the lunch you packed!
Afternoon (Snorkel Spot 2): Save the best for last! Your final stop is the “Crown Jewel” of Exmouth: Turquoise Bay. This place is famous for a reason, the water is unbelievably blue and it boasts world-class drift snorkelling.
To do the drift, read the sign at the entrance, walk south down the beach, and simply step into the ocean. The current will gently carry you north over the most vibrant coral gardens. Just be mindful of the strong currents and make sure you exit the water before the end of the sandbar.
Late Afternoon: Soak in the last of those pristine views, then start the drive back to Exmouth. If you’ve still got some energy, Sandy Bay is another idyllic beach nearby, perfect for a final, relaxing dip.

How Many Days is Really Enough in Exmouth?
This is a question we get all the time, and our answer is always: “Longer than you think!”
Many people only book for 3-4 days and leave wishing they had more. This 3-day itinerary is a sprint, and you will leave wanting to come back.
We recommend a minimum of 5 to 7 days. This gives you enough time to do a major boat tour (like a whale shark swim), have a couple of full days to properly explore all the gorges and beaches in Cape Range National Park, and have a ‘rest’ day in town without feeling rushed.

Our Thoughts
