The Laundromat Story
On our last big trip, we went up to Western Australia and it was great. The kids were a bit older, which meant they liked to explore more, which meant they ended up in the mud a lot more. So basically we spent a lot of time at laundromats.
We did not realise how expensive laundromats were, especially with kids and their clothes. You can’t put lots of stuff in the machines, and then you have to put it in the dryer because you never have any time to sit and wait. You put your $2 and your $4 in, and that doesn’t seem too bad, but then your clothes are still damp at the end of the cycle. So your next $2 and $4 goes in, and before you know it, you’ve spent around $50 at the laundromat. We had no idea about that one.
The Fix: Use Caravan Parks for Washing
If you go to a caravan park, get your washing done then, because you can put it on the clothesline and let it dry naturally instead. When you’re in a rush, laundromats do work, they’re just expensive. Once we clocked onto that pattern, we started planning our washing around caravan park stays rather than reaching for whichever laundromat happened to be nearby.
The Sneaky Ice Cream Stop
If you’ve got a kid, you know what this is. You stop at a servo and buy one ice cream, and that one ice cream ends up being one for every family member. All of a sudden that’s $30 on ice cream, which might also mean grabbing a quick drink and a packet of chips, and suddenly you’ve spent $50 at the servo.
If you’re on the road day after day and you keep offering another ice cream, there’s $100, $200 easily. It’s all fine if you’ve budgeted for it. If you haven’t, this is where you’ll run into trouble.
Our Thoughts
None of this is about denying your kids an ice cream or avoiding the laundromat when you genuinely need it. It’s about being aware that these small, repeated spends add up faster than the big obvious ones, precisely because each individual one feels too small to worry about.
Put a rough weekly number against this category too, not just fuel and accommodation. It’s the category most families forget to budget for at all, and the one that quietly explains where a chunk of the week’s money actually went.
