Are you looking for a 3,5 or 7 day Perth itinerary to see the best bits? This guide covers both the most popular places and the lesser-known gems.
Hello, sunshine! Forget everything you’ve heard about Perth being “isolated.” I like to think of it as a well-kept secret, a sun-drenched paradise where vibrant city life, breathtaking nature, and some of the nicest weather come together.
It’s a city that runs on its own relaxed clock, where the beaches are pristine, the sunsets are legendary, and there’s a new adventure around every corner.
I (Margie) have lived in Perth and loved exploring the city and its surrounds. More recently, we’ve visited as a family countless times and have our favourite spots we like to visit.
I’ve put together the ultimate guide to help you plan the perfect trip. Even if you have only a few days while transiting, this itinerary is designed to give you the best of Perth. We’ll cover where to stay, what to do, and how to get around, all with a unique flow that will make you feel less like a tourist and more like a local. So, let’s get into it!

Best Time to Visit Perth
A little planning goes a long way. Here’s what you need to know before you pack your bags. Just remember, there’s no bad time to visit Australia’s sunniest capital!
Spring (September – November)
The weather is gorgeous in Spring, and the state comes alive with a blanket of stunning wildflowers. Average temps are around 12-23°C (53-73°F). Days are warm and pleasant, so pack layers like t-shirts, jeans, and a light jacket for the cooler evenings.

Summer (December – February)
It gets hot and dry, but it’s the perfect time for beach-hopping. A cooling afternoon sea breeze, known locally as the “Fremantle Doctor,” is a welcome relief. Average temps are 17-30°C (63-86°F). Think light and breezy: shorts, t-shirts, swimwear, and don’t forget a hat and sunscreen!
The major Australian school holidays happen during summer, usually from the start of December through to late January. I would highly recommend booking ahead during this time as it can get busy.
Autumn (March – May)
You’ll find warm, sunny days and cooler nights, making it ideal for exploring. Average temps are 14-26°C (57-79°F). Similar to spring, layers are your friend. It’s warm enough for shorts during the day, but you’ll want a warmer jacket at night.
Winter (June – August)
It’s the coolest and wettest time of year, but still quite mild. It’s a great time to find deals on flights and accommodation. Average temps are 8-19°C (46-66°F). Pack for cooler weather: jeans, long-sleeved tops, warm sweaters, and a good waterproof jacket are essential. I always travel with a down jacket during winter but I do feel the cold.
Getting to & Around Perth
Flights
You’ll be flying into Perth Airport (PER). From there, it’s about a 20-30 minute drive or rideshare to the city. There is a train that departs the airport and heads directly to the city.
Public Transport
Perth’s Transperth system (buses, trains, ferries) is easy to use. Check out this website that gives you all the details of Perth’s public transport.
Car Rental
If you plan on doing day trips to the Pinnacles or Swan Valley, I’d recommend renting a car for maximum flexibility.
Where to Stay in Perth
There are so many options when it comes to accommodation in Perth. If you’re on a short timeline, I’d suggest staying in the CBD, as it is the closest to everything. If you want a bit of variety or are looking for something different, then have a look at Fremantle or Cottesloe.
Perth CBD
Perfect for first-timers who want to be in the heart of the action. You’re close to everything, from shopping and restaurants to Elizabeth Quay.
- Luxury Pick: Pan Pacific Perth, big beds, heated swimming pools, many bars and restaurants.
- Mid-Range Gem: Pensione Hotel Perth: charming, great location close to everything.
- Budget-Friendly: Criterion Hotel Perth 24 hour check in, great location, neat rooms.
Fremantle (Freo)
If you love a bohemian, historical vibe, Freo is for you. Its laid back streets are filled with art, markets, and fantastic pubs.
- Cool & Quirky: YHA Fremantle Prison, Fremantle. Yes, a prison – that’s been renovated into a hotel with a difference! This is a must see!
- Historic Charm: Garde and Warders Hotel, Fremantle. If you’re looking for 5-star, elegant accommodation, this needs to be top of your list.
Cottesloe
If you dream of waking up to ocean views, this is your spot. It’s a beautiful beachside suburb with a relaxed, upscale feel. The Ocean Beach Hotel is right on the waterfront, complete with an onsite restaurant, bars and more!

This itinerary is designed to give you a unique and memorable Perth experience, starting with a relaxed, ocean vibe.
Day 1: Port City Charm & Ocean Sunsets
Morning:
We’re starting our adventure in Fremantle! If it’s a weekend (Friday-Sunday), your first stop has to be the vibrant Fremantle Markets. Grab a coffee and wander through the stalls of local crafts, fresh produce, and delicious food. Afterwards, step back in time with a fascinating tour of the historic Fremantle Prison, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Afternoon:
Spend the afternoon getting lost in Freo’s charming streets. Stop in at the Little Creatures Brewery for a bite to eat and taste some of their beers. Wander across the road to the tourist wheel Fremantle and take in the sights from a different angle.

Evening:
As the day winds down, take a short drive or train ride up the coast to Cottesloe Beach. There’s no better way to end your first day than by grabbing some fish and chips and watching the incredible sunset over the Indian Ocean.
Day 2: Island Adventures & City Lights
Full Day:
Get ready for a day with a difference at Rottnest Island! This car-free paradise is home to the world’s happiest animal, the quokka. The best way to explore is by booking a ferry and renting a bike to cycle between the island’s 63 stunning beaches and secluded bays.
My tip: head away from the main settlement to find the friendliest quokkas for that famous selfie!
Book your ferry today, especially if it’s peak season

After ferrying back to the mainland, head to Elizabeth Quay on the Perth waterfront. The area comes alive at night. Enjoy dinner at one of the fantastic restaurants and take a stroll across the bridge to see the beautiful city skyline lit up.
Day 3: Park Views & Local Vibes
Morning:
Start your day at the magnificent Kings Park & Botanic Garden. It’s one of the largest inner-city parks in the world! Don’t miss the Federation Walkway, a treetop bridge that offers breathtaking views of the city and Swan River. Time to live like a local. Skip the main shopping malls and head to Leederville. This trendy neighbourhood is packed with personality. Explore the quirky boutiques and record stores along Oxford Street, and recharge with a coffee at one of its many cool cafes.

Day 4: Pinnacles Desert & Wildlife
Today is an epic road trip day. Head north for a full-day tour to the otherworldly Pinnacles Desert. Walking among these ancient limestone pillars feels like you’re on another planet. Day 5: A Day Trip to the Swan Valley
After a big day yesterday, it’s time to relax and indulge. Just a short drive from the city, the Swan Valley is Western Australia’s oldest wine region. Spend the day tasting your way through award-winning wineries, breweries, and distilleries. Don’t forget to stop at the local factories for cheese, chocolate, and nougat!

Day 6: River Cycles & Zoo Encounters
Morning:
See the city from a new perspective. Hire a bike and cycle the Swan River trail. The popular “bridges” loop takes you from the city, across the causeway to South Perth, and back over the Narrows Bridge. The views of the city skyline from the South Perth foreshore are absolutely spectacular.

Afternoon:
While you’re in South Perth, head to the Perth Zoo to spend a few hours with amazing animals from Australia and all around the globe.

Day 7: Visit Margaret River
Margaret River is a region that has so much to offer. If you’re short on time, I would highly recommend a tour as it does take a few hours to drive to Margaret River from Perth.
Drop into some of the many wineries, explore some of the most unique caves that I’ve ever seen, visit Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse to see where the Indian Ocean meets the Southern Ocean and more with this highly rated tour.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many days in Perth is enough?
While you can see the main highlights in a packed 3 days, I recommend at least 5 days to get a real feel for the city and enjoy a day trip without rushing. A full 7 days allows you to explore different neighbourhoods and beaches at a much more relaxed pace.
What month is best to visit Perth?
Perth is great year-round, but the best time to visit is Spring (September to November). The weather is warm and pleasant, and you get to see the spectacular wildflowers in bloom across the region. Autumn (March to May) is a close second with similar beautiful weather.
How to spend 5 days in Perth?
Our 5-day itinerary gives you the perfect mix of city, nature, and adventure. You’ll spend the first 3 days exploring Fremantle, Rottnest Island, Kings Park, and the city’s local neighbourhoods. You’ll then add two amazing day trips: one to the incredible Pinnacles Desert and another to the indulgent Swan Valley wine region.
Is it better to stay in Perth CBD or Fremantle?
It depends on the vibe you’re looking for!
- Stay in the CBD if you’re a first-time visitor, want to be centrally located for tours and transport, and prefer being in the middle of the shopping and city action.
- Stay in Fremantle if you want a more relaxed, bohemian experience with a rich history, amazing cafes, and a strong pub culture, all within walking distance.
