How To Get There & How Long To Stay
First, let’s talk logistics. Getting to Margaret River is a straight shot south from Perth, and it’s a pleasant three-hour drive. The most important bit of advice I can give you is this: you absolutely need your own transport.
The region is massive, and all the best spots are spread out. A hire car is a must, but if you really want to do it right, hiring a campervan is the ultimate way to have a bit more freedom.
If you’re driving down from Perth yourself, check out our full Perth to Margaret River road trip guide for the best stops along the way.
For the best campervan options around, check out StarRV. Luxury on wheels!
Now, for timing. I’ve laid out three-day itineraries here because that’s the absolute minimum I’d recommend to get a real taste of the place without rushing around. You could easily stretch any of these plans out over a week and still not see everything. Think of these as a solid starting point.
And if you’re planning on fully enjoying the wineries (and you should), I highly recommend booking a tour. It means no one has to be the designated driver and you can just kick back and enjoy it.

Know Before You Go (The Boring But Crucial Stuff)
I know planning isn’t the most exciting part, but trust me, a little bit of prep for Margs makes all the difference.
Here’s what you need to know so you can hit the ground running.
Best Time to Visit
There’s no bad time to go, but each season offers a unique experience:
- Summer (Dec-Feb): The whole place is absolutely vibrant. Long, sunny days are perfect for the beach. Just be ready for bigger crowds – you have to book your accommodation and tours well in advance.
- Autumn (Mar-May): This is my personal favourite time to visit. The weather is just about perfect, with warm days and cool nights. The vines are looking lush, and the summer crowds have dispersed. It’s pure bliss.
- Winter (Jun-Aug): This is the secret season. Think cozy fires, a bold red, watching massive ocean storms roll in, and spotting whales cruising past. It’s quiet, epic, and beautiful.
- Spring (Sep-Nov): The landscape comes alive with wildflowers. It’s another whale-watching season, and the weather is simply beautiful!
The towns of Margaret River
- Busselton: This is the gateway, famous for that ridiculously long 1.8km jetty. Its calm, protected bay makes it our top pick for the little ones.
- Dunsborough: A bit more upscale, with awesome sheltered beaches like Meelup and Eagle Bay. It’s got a great cafe scene and some cool shops, making it another solid choice for families.
- Yallingup: This is the raw, rugged end of town. The spot for serious surfers and anyone who loves a dramatic coastline like Canal Rocks. It’s also home to some of the original, legendary wineries.
- Margaret River Town: The pumping heart of it all. If you want to be right in the heart of the main strip with all the restaurants, bars, and galleries, this is your spot.
- Augusta: A quiet, historic town at the far southern tip where the Indian and Southern Oceans meet. It’s the best base for whale watching and a more chilled-out pace.
Where to Stay (A Quick Guide)
- Luxury: Heritage Trail Lodge. Only 400m from the town centre of Margaret River, this is a secluded B&B with stunning views, spa bath and free breakfast.
