So, you’ve decided to dive into freelancing to fund the Big Lap. You’ve polished up your profile, you’re brimming with excitement, and then you hit that first major hurdle: how on earth do you get your first freelance job?
It’s a question I get asked all the time, and I remember the feeling well. When I first started on Upwork, it took me about two or three weeks to land my first paid gig.
Was it a high-paying, glamorous job that aligned perfectly with my passions? As I said in our group call, not even close! It was stressful, a bit boring, and definitely not my dream job. But you know what? It got my foot in the door and was the perfect start.

These are the types of simple, low-stress jobs I took on right at the start. They were the really, really basic entry-level type things that I knew I’d get a “yes” answer to.

They’ll send you short scripts to read (sometimes just a few sentences!), and you get paid for it. It’s often fun, incredibly low-pressure (you can’t really stuff it up!), and an easy way to pocket $20-$30. Just search for “AI Voiceover” or “AI Training” on freelance platforms.
- User-Generated Content (UGC): Don’t let the name fool you; this isn’t just for teenage TikTokers putting on makeup. Heaps of brands, from wineries to camping gear companies, will send you their products for free and pay you for a simple, authentic video of you using them. They don’t want a polished ad; they want real, raw footage of people using their stuff. It’s a great way to build your portfolio and, hey, free stuff is always a bonus!
