Falls Creek is one of our favs. Being so easy to get to, relatively cheap compared to other resorts and simple to get around, Falls Creek is a ski resort you need to visit.

Hidden high in the Victorian high country, Falls Creek in winter isn’t just a destination; it’s a full experience.

We’ve been fortunate enough to call Falls Creek our winter playground for many years, returning time and again to soak in its unique alpine charm, from its charming ski-in/ski-out village to its breathtaking natural beauty.

Over many winter holidays (and summer – but that’s a blog for another day) we’ve explored every corner of this awesome ski village. We’ve found the best runs, the best pubs and the best accommodation.

As we’ve visited both as a couple and as a family over the last few years, we are in a great position to guide you through planning your ultimate Falls Creek winter escape. For the record, I love snowboarding, while Tim loves skiing, but we both agree the runs are great!

Falls Creek Alpine Resort is Victoria’s largest ski resort, and we think the best value for money close to home. Located in the north-east of Victoria, approximately 4.5 hours’ drive from Melbourne, it’s well known for its extensive ski-in/ski-out village, making it incredibly convenient to access the slopes right from your doorstep.

This unique village design means less time walking in ski boots and more time enjoying the snow. Plus, you can drop in to your accommodation many times during the day to grab a cuppa, lunch or snack without wasting precious slope time! (It also makes it cheaper if you’re not buying restaurant food!)

Falls Creek is also amazing for all skiing levels. I would love to think I’m a black run pro, but unless I accidentally end up on a black run (tip, don’t stare at the views, read the signs!), they have plenty of runs for the occasional yearly visitor.

Beginners/kids

Beginners can find their feet on gentle, wide slopes, including the well-known Wombat’s Ramble, which is Australia’s longest green run. There are kids’ schools, toboggan runs, and more.

Intermediate/Advanced

Intermediate riders will love the abundance of blue runs, while advanced skiers and snowboarders can test their skills on challenging black runs.

Beyond downhill skiing and snowboarding, it’s also Australia’s top cross-country skiing destination, with over 65km of cross-country trails that wind through stunning alpine wilderness.

The Village

The village itself is a vibrant hub, filled with restaurants, cafes, bars, and shops, all easily accessible by foot. It’s a place where families can enjoy dedicated snow play areas, couples can find romantic hideaways, and those who like adventure can find plenty.

If you’re looking for a modern, close to everything resort, check out St Falls Resort. Located right in the main part of the villiage, you can’t get closer to the action! Rooms facing the slopes will have front row seats to the base of the main run, while the other side will have views of the mountains.

Each room has a kitchen, balcony, and the facilities include an indoor swimming pool, sauna, hot tub and fitness center! After your gym sesh, then head to the on site resaurant and bar that offers Australian cuisine.

Cedarwood Apartments has been one of our families go-to for accomodation. It’s location is super convenient to chairlifts. The rooms are spacious, many with awesome views of the mountians.

You’ll also find a fully equipped kitchen with everything you need to make your own meals. Some of the apartments have 3 bedrooms, perfect for extended family stays. It’s also great value for money.

Alpine View Apartments is a great option for those wanting everything at a good value. This is another go-to stay for our family, especially when we’re travelling with extended family as their are options for 2,3 and 4 bedroom apartments.

You’ll find full kitchen facilities, allowing you to prepare your own meals and significantly save on dining out expenses throughout your stay. The best part, I think, is the proximity to the chairlifts. Alpine View Apartments is away from the main villiage, so it’s a little quieter, but still enough to walk to.

Frueauf Village Apartments

Astra Restaurant and Bar

As I mentioned in the accommodation section, Astra’s restaurant is a must-visit for any food enthusiast. You’ll find a sophisticated, modern alpine-inspired menu that focuses on fresh, locally sourced produce. It’s warm and inviting, and if it’s a special occasion, you can book the private wine room.

The Chophouse

If you’re in the mood for a good steak, head to the Chophouse. Inspired by Louisiana, you’ll find delicious meals with craft beers. It’s got a lovely warm cosy feel, perfect for a hearty dinner after a day on the slopes!

Cloud 9

• Location: Top of Halley’s Comet chairlift
• Price: standard

Cloud 9 is a standout for us; there aren’t too many places you can jump on a chairlift to visit! The views are amazing! Grab a tasty pizza or something from the menu for some good food while you’re out on the slopes.

Cloud 9 also offers takeaway teas and coffees, so you can grab and go! While you’re at Falls Creek, you need to visit Cloud 9 at least once!

The Cock N’ Bull

If you’re looking for a cozy, traditional pub experience, The Cock N’ Bull delivers exactly that. This authentic English-style pub, found right in the heart of Falls Creek, offers a wide range of beers, wines, and spirits.

Best Things To Do In Falls Creek (Beyond the usual!)

While skiing and snowboarding are undoubtedly the main draws to Falls Creek, the resort offers so much more. We have plenty of family members who visit falls creek with us, who don’t ski.

These are the top things we enjoy when not on the slopes:

Night Skiing & Fireworks

Ok, so this is a skiing experience, but have you ever been down the slopes at night time?! Head down the green run, Wombats Ramble at night time on a Wednesday and Saturday evening. If you’re not a skier, then head to the base of Wombat’s Ramble, where you’ll often find fireworks.

Cross-Country Skiing on the Nordic Trails

Falls Creek is renowned as Australia’s undisputed home of cross-country skiing, with an incredible network of over 65km of trails. It covers the Bogong High Plains and beyond. Starting at the Nordic Bowl and continuing new off-piste terrain within the National Park

Tubing and Tobogganing at the Snow Play Park

Tobogganing is where we spend many days now with 2 young kids. There is a dedicated toboggan run at Windy Corner. You’ll find a nice cafe close by, perfect for when you’re watching your kids! Bring your own toboggan, or hire one from one of the many shops

I would suggest to fly – or take a car and plan at least 4 full days drive.

When is the best time to visit Falls Creek for snow?

The official snow season at Falls Creek typically runs from around June to September. You’ll find accommodation and lift passes will be the most expensive in the middle of these dates, with a shoulder season on either end. Towards the beginning and end of the season, there may be less snow, and some runs may close.

Do I need chains for my car to drive to Falls Creek?

Yes, all vehicles travelling to Falls Creek during the official snow season are legally required to carry snow chains, even if your vehicle is 4WD or AWD. They must be fitted where directed by signage or resort staff, typically just before you enter the resort village. Fines apply for not carrying and fitting chains as directed, so it’s a critical safety and legal requirement.

Practice fitting your chains before you need to use them! You can rent or buy them from places in Mount Beauty on your way up.

Can you fly into Falls Creek?

There is no direct commercial airport at Falls Creek. The nearest major airport is Albury Airport (ABX), which is located approximately a 1 hour and 45-minute drive from the resort.

Is Falls Creek good for beginners?

Absolutely! Falls Creek is an excellent destination for beginners to learn and develop their ski and snowboard skills. It has a dedicated beginner area with gentle, wide slopes and convenient magic carpets (conveyor belt lifts) that make learning easy and fun.
